All course content will be available starting Monday, May 10. All interested staff will have until Friday, May 21 to register. You may complete all required exercises at your own pace, so long as you are wrapped up by the WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9 DEADLINE.
1. Read about the following popular book genres. You will also find paper copies of these documents in the NetTrek folder labeled "Blog Documents and Instructions." These folders are located at each CCPL, CPL, and SBC Public Service desk, as well as at the CPL Circulation computer.
PLEASE NOTE: Each document below will open in a new window. Simply close this new window to return to the NetTrek Outpost.
- Young Adult Fiction- Our subscription database Novelist does not have a summary sheet for this genre, so we turned to Google Books to find related readings on this topic. By clicking on the link above, you will be taken to an online version of "Serving Teens Through Reader's Advisory" by Heather Booth. Please read pages 31-36: Tips for A Generalist. You may navigate this title by using the toolbar at the top of your browser. Please note that Google Books does not allow printing of any of their titles, so a hard copy of this reading will not be available. For further tips and a couple demo videos, please visit: "Order of Operations of Teen Reader's Advisory," also by Heather Booth.
- Graphic Novels: For this genre we will be turning to the Internet Public Library. They provide two very credible, easy-to-read articles: History and Basics and In Schools and Libraries. Check out the "Relevant Websites" tab in each article for more information and suggested titles.

2. Create two separate lists in the new catalog based on two of the six genres. In each list, there should be 3-5 titles or authors that you could confidently recommend to patrons. For example, in this exercise you might choose to focus on the Romance and Graphic Novel genres. You would then create two separate lists in the new catalog with 3-5 Romance titles (or authors) in one list, and 3-5 Graphic Novel titles (or authors) in another list. All of your recommendations should be targeted toward adult or young adult readers.
